JACKSON, Miss. — A Jackson police officer has been charged with capital murder in the death of a 1-year-old child.

Charges against Det. Natyyo Gray were upgraded Monday after an autopsy showed Aubrey Brown’s death was caused by severe blunt force trauma.

Police spokeswoman Colendula Green says officers were called to the University of Mississippi Medical Center at about 2:41 p.m. Sunday in reference to unknown injuries to a child. The baby was pronounced dead about 4:30 p.m.

Gray was initially booked with felony child abuse. Police say the baby was in Gray’s care.

Chancery court documents show Gray was the child’s father and had been ordered to pay child support.

Gray is being held in the Hinds County jail pending an initial court appearance.
